Well firstly, I feel that if it wasn’t for skateboarding, I wouldn’t have ended up getting into drawing and design. The designs and illustrations in skateboarding are part of what drew me to it in the first place.
I think that my approach to skateboarding and design both come from the same place. I feel they are both an endlessly fun game that you’ll never complete. There is always something else you could do, always new things right around the corner. With every new skill picked up, you open up a whole new world of possibilities.
In both art and skateboarding I want to try and create something that I think is interesting, try and make it look good and have fun while I’m doing it. Otherwise what would be the point?
God, there is so much skater made art out there that inspires me it’s hard to narrow it down. I enjoyed Ed Templeton’s stuff for Toy Machine a lot when I was younger so I’ve always had a soft spot for that and also Evan Hecox’s stuff for Chocolate Skateboards in the late 90’s & early 2000’s.
I couldn’t write about this stuff without mentioning a few No Comply members, I’ve be riding for Science Skateboards since Chris made the first run of boards. I’ve seen the company grow and improve with each passing year.
I’m really stoked on what Chris has been doing visually with the company. Proper stoked on him and the brand. Great skateboarder, nice guy and awesome designer. Cheers for the boards over the years Chris.
Currently, I’m well stoked to see the work Greg Conroy has been with his Serious Adult stuff. Rad dude, rad skater, rad art, so props to him.
I think the potential of The No Comply Network is amazing. I think that skateboarding is a creative act in its self, which is why there are so many skaters that also do other creative things. The mind set go hand in hand. So it’s awesome to have some help to link these things from within and outside of the skateboarding community. I can see it helping lots of people.
The Science Skateboards video is just finishing up and I’m working on a few illustration projects that should be finished soon.
